When a Maui bus stalled inside the Kihei roundabout near Safeway on Friday, you could almost hear locals driving by yelling, “Why stop there?!”
The incident caused minor inconveniences for motorists to change routes, or drive around the bus over the elevated island section.
However, with a deluge of Maui bus breakdowns recently, Maui Insight wondered along with others: Are there better places for buses to stall on island?
Here are our suggestions, should a bus driver foresee mechanical trouble nearby.
On Maui Veterans Highway (311) in between Kihei and Kahului
Pros: If near the Maui Humane Society, passengers could stop by and see some cute pooches or kitties. Or, if nearer to the big old long-closed sugar mill, walk in to see the neat Sugar Museum there. You can also drop off mail to be delivered in Puunene!
Cons: Hard walking anywhere else; and usually super hot.
Right at the only stoplight in Paia
Pros: Might as well be equitable about it and tick off everyone – commuters and tourists alike. Pick one of the three entry points, and leave a bus there for a break. Have a slice of flatbread pizza while awaiting a tow truck, and cool off!
Cons: Hippies could commandeer the vehicle, and maybe paint it like that Partridge Family bus. Also, houseless individuals could set up camp inside.
On the Honoapiilani Highway in Waikapu
Just kidding! That would suck. Middle of nowhere, and might actually block a lane of traffic on a consistently busy stretch of roadway.
Keokea
Wait, does a Maui Bus line go that far? We heard it goes way deep Upcountry. Anyway, anywhere in Kula would be a tough place to be on a bus that stopped working.
Closest to wherever the county stores its massive stockpile of traffic safety cones
Hopefully the county has invested like New York City and has those ginormous orange striped beasts! Break them out!
