The re-emergence of public art displays after the pandemic-induced hibernation continues this month in Maui.

A long-popular painting gallery in South Maui that returned last month has added a third day of the week for visitors to marvel at paintings of Valley Isle scenery; while the well-established 2nd Friday Art Show at Down the Hatch this month is set in Lahaina for May 14.

Wailea-based painter Diane Appler has announced the addition of Thursdays for her weekly live-painting events. Now each week, Appler is set to paint live before audiences and provide custom art for visitors on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to noon at the Wailea Marriott.

Appler will be set up in the breezeway near Starbucks at the Wailea Beach Resort, 3700 Wailea Alanui Drive in Wailea.

Aside from the live painting, Appler offers custom work upon request, in original oil paintings or premium-quality reproductions using the giclee process (a type of fine-art, high-quality reproduction printing by inkjet by artists).

Up the coast in West Maui, a monthly art show is scheduled to raise funds for a nonprofit preschool serving children ages 3 to 5 in Lahaina. The 2nd Friday Art Show at Down the Hatch is 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. May 14, at the eatery at the popular restaurant and bar at 658 Front St. in Lahaina.

The art show returned last month after being shut down by the pandemic emergency in spring last year, and now continues to provide numerous artists on island with a platform to show their works for the visiting public.

Down the Hatch welcomes up-and-coming Maui artists for the monthly presentation. For more information, contact DTH via its website.
