"Unveiled Mana" ~ an original print by Maui artist Sela Weissmann, is sure to attract many eyes at the Down the Hatch 2nd Friday Art Show on April 9.

Continuing its 4-year run of showcasing local artists, Down the Hatch restaurant in Lahaina will feature Maui artist Sela Weissmann this Friday in an art exhibit to raise both awareness for local artists as well as funds for a nonprofit Lahaina preschool.

The 2nd Friday Art Show Down the Hatch! is set for 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, April 9 at Down the Hatch - A Place to Eat Fish, 658 Front St., Lahaina.

Weissmann’s fine art original, high-quality poster prints are created on matte archival paper; and the artist can create personalized pieces on commission by request. Included Friday will be recent additions to her collection, “Acturian Message” and “Unveiled Mana,” a colorful piece depicting a maiden atop a surfboard shielding her eyes from a west Maui sunset (see featured image at top).

“Through the creative expression of art, it is my desire to share with you something that can be as deeply felt, as it can be seen,” Weissmann says of her artwork as stated on her website.

The 2nd Friday Art Show continues to provide the numerous artists around the island with a platform to put their best works forward before a diverse audience.

“There are so many artists on Maui, and this event is great for local artists of the community,” said Ashley Davis, spokesperson for Down the Hatch restaurant. In the community-driven monthly showcase, artists make a donation to the Children of the Rainbow preschool in Lahaina, she said.

Since 1998, Children of the Rainbow has served children ages 3 to 5 through the Lahaina United Methodist Church, which established the preschool program as a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The organization seeks to “educate, protect and help develop the mind, body, and spirit of Hawaii’s youth.”

The preschool’s mission is based on the belief that there is a continuing need for quality childcare in the community. It is an open, inclusive, interracial, and nonpolitical program, and all funds it generates are reinvested into the program.

Down the Hatch is always looking for up-and-coming or new artists for its 2nd Friday Art Show presentation. For more information, contact Down the Hatch via its website.

Down the Hatch was opened in 2015 by 3 childhood friends from Georgia, who after years of living on-island and working in the service industry chose to open a seafood restaurant and bar catering to the community and visitors with their own unique style of Southern Aloha.
