Maui County economic experts project record-volume sales for Spam this Thanksgiving, as Maui islanders turn to their old favorite to combat high inflation.
"Hawaii residents are lucky because they have a replacement for turkey or ham that they love," said Paia Jones, economic advisor to the County of Maui.
"In other states, families are trying to figure out what to do now that turkeys are going for $10 per pound."
Sales were noticeably brisk in Kihei, where ABC Store employees scrambled to keep the little square tin cans on shelves.
"I watched this one lady hold her arm out and sweep an entire shelf full of Spam into her cart," said Stephanie Lum of the Sugar Beach ABC Store. "We have no idea where we'll get enough Spam to last the month, let alone the rest of the year."
Nationally, Spam stock has risen 16 points this month as Americans struggle just to afford enough gas to get to work.
