Maui Town in the Running for Most Boring Weather of the Year Award

A central Maui community has been nominated for an award honoring the place with the most uninteresting weather forecasts for the year.

The National Weather Forecasts Watchdogs, based in Portland, Ore., has placed Kahului among its four nominees for the most boring weather forecasts of 2024.

“We monitor 10-day weather forecasts for thousands of American communities, and we can’t tell you how many days in a row Kahului would have a low of 65 and a high of 74 degrees,” said Agnes Fonzarelli, president of the nonprofit NWFW. “It’s a location we learned has an uncanny ability to deliver the same high-quality weather day in and day out.”

Also in the running are Key West, Fla.; Carlsbad, Calif.; and Austin, Texas.

The Watchdogs organization consists of about a dozen volunteers, usually nerdy retirees, who monitor weather forecasters from around the nation. The goal is to gather data to provide real estate professionals and home buyers detailed information about locations in regions where they do business.

Interestingly, so far this year the worst weather forecasts have come from Seattle, Wash., Fonzarelli said.

Maui locals contacted Wednesday were not surprised by the nomination.

“What can we say? We live in a place that is paradise for many reasons,” said Kawika Davidson, 32, of Kahului, in front of Foodland near the Queen’s mall. “Having weather that is not too hot, and rarely cold, contributes to the desirableness overall.”

The NWFW will announce the award program’s winners at a banquet in Portland in September.
