Weather prognosticators think a light rain is a coming to Maui, nudging county government personnel to work a little more to kick off the week.
A light rain that might last more than a half hour is predicted sometime this morning, clogging Facebook groups with concerns from coming visitors.
“Should I pack an umbrella and shoes?” asked Mildred Potter of Portland. “I mean, 70 percent chance sounds almost guaranteed.”
“Planning a trip to Maui is like washing your car. As soon as you’re done, it will rain,” said Kenny Logginstead of Seattle while exiting the Kahului Airport terminal.
County officials urged visitors not to panic, as rains this month have been mild. They also warned of a 1-degree temperature change expected mid-week.
“Of course we’re prepared,” said Christopher Aagaa of the Maui County Transportation Department. “We told all crews to cut back on talk story sessions throughout the day.”
High temperatures this week are forecast at 87 degrees, except for Thursday which might bump up to 88 degrees.
Merchants are bracing for all the tourist questions that come with any weather change on Maui.
“We just try to get them to buy more umbrellas,” said Gina Whitley, a clerk at ABC Store in Kihei. “And we warn about the hotter temperature and suggest some 100 spf sunblock. Reef-safe, of course.”
