Central Pacific weather forecasters predict consecutive days later this week where the high temperature on Maui will not crack the 80-degrees threshold.
In an unusual weather "perfect storm," weather-watchers say the lack of high heat for four days might be attributed to a number of factors all happening simultaneously.
"First, there was that gigantic volcanic explosion down south, and some of the particles blown into the atmosphere could block some of the sun's rays," said Maurie Gorains, a meteorologist with the Central Pacific Weather Beacon based in Kihei. "Second, there's a big freeze predicted for the East Coast of the United States, and those types of cold fronts can just suck the heat right out of the tropics.
"Third, some scientists are pointing to high inflation. They haven't yet explained precisely why, except that everything right now seems to be blamed on high inflation."
The Weather Channel reports that the Valley Isle will have highs up to 81 or 82 degrees through Friday, but that's when the cold spell is predicted to kick in.
Maui residents and visitors can expect highs of only 79 for several days ~ with a low high of 78 expected Monday to start the new week.
A manager at Walmart in Kahului said she has not noticed an uptick in the sales of jeans, pants, or hoodies. "Honestly it's been clear and fairly warm pretty much every day the past couple of weeks," she said.
National news network CNN has called the weather prognostication the "Astronomical Hawaii Freeze of 2022."
