Kahului Airport Speed Bumps Ranked Biggest in U.S. {NRL}

BEWARE MOTORISTS: The speed bumps inside Kahului Airport (OGG) have been ranked the biggest and "most bone-jarring" in the nation.

The speed bumps on access roadways at Kahului Airport have been ranked atop a list of biggest airport annoyances in the United States, according to the results of a study released Tuesday.

The National Airport Automobile Access Foundation (NAAAF) studied various factors of international airport access roads and paths in the United States from January to September this year.

Part of the work was to judge speed bumps at about 330 major airports across the nation. Surprising nobody, Kahului Airport was determined to have the biggest and "most annoying" traffic bumps.

"Omg! Has anyone else been NOT awake and accidentally hit the speed bump going into the car rental return going 28 instead of 15?" wrote Angie Hybiak of Parker, Colo., on a Facebook group recently. "Holy cow! Let me tell you, IT WILL WAKE YOU UP!"

The study ranked speed bumps based on engineering, height, size, and other factors such as a level of impact on a "Bone Jarring Scale." Kahului Airport ranked a solid 10 in that last factor.

"We can't figure out precisely why those speed bumps in Kahului Airport can cause your vehicle to get airborne if you drive too fast over them," said Ahmed Agarwal of the NAAAF. "All we know is we got a lot of reports from passengers bonking their heads on car roofs while bumping over them.

"We recommend either they re-engineer the speed bumps, to make them vehicularly passable, or lower the speed limit over them from 15 mph to 2 mph."

Locals were not impressed by the study.

"Visitors all drive too fast at the airport anyway," said Karen Ogilvy of Wailuku.

"I imagine we would oppose re-engineering or changing those speed bumps," said Harold Haalulu, president of the Maui Auto Suspension Repairers Union. "We spent a lot of time helping the state design them."
