Recent Storms Point Maui Built to New 'Wet Times' Shoe and Clothing Line {NRL}
Responding to heavy recent rains, popular local lifestyle brand Maui Built has announced a new line of shoes, pants, and other apparel designed specifically to keep body parts warm and dry during storms.
The company on Sunday released photos of some of the new items, to be available immediately, including the Flooder pants with bottom cuffs at least 6 inches off the ground, and The Non-Slippah high-top shoes to keep water from between toes and on ankles.
"We watched local struggle to cross some streets during the big storm earlier this month," said Joe Builtit, marketing director for the company. "We saw kids pushing bikes across roads with the water almost to their knees, and thought, 'This is a good way to lose a slipper."
The new Wet Times line will provide anti-rainfall clothing items from September through May each year.
The line also includes the Snugg, a take on UGG boots with Hawaiian designs on the exterior and super-soft cushioning inside; the Fishionator long pants to protect knees and ankles while tailgating and talking story in rains; and the Big Goofy Hat designed much like the popular sun hats found on island only more water-proof.
Responses from visitors Sunday were positive.
"My toes got so wet when it rained hard a couple of weeks ago," said Destiny Hunekai, a visitor from Los Angeles. "It was gross to walk around with the water squishing between the toes. We're stoked someone thought of this!"
But Howard Ohumu of Haiku was not quite convinced.
"First of all, even when it rains it's rarely cold enough to worry about," he said. "And second, who wears pants around here? Or dress shoes? I don't think they'll sell well."
