The County of Maui Department of Transportation seeks public engagement and input on proposed changes to Maui Bus routes, as part of the Getting on Board Maui Bus Route Study.

The study is to improve and expand transit service. Maui Bus has identified potential changes for: Routes 1, 2, 5, 6, 8, 15, 23, 25, 35, 39, and 40.

The proposed changes would affect bus routes in Central Maui, West Maui, South Maui, and Upcountry. Maps for each of the areas can be found on the project website at www.gettingonboardmauibus.com.

Two of the routes ~ Route 8 Waihee Villager in Central Maui, and Route 39 Kula Islander ~ are proposed to be replaced by on-demand service. This would allow residents to request trips by phone or via a smartphone app. Trips must start and end within a specified zone. Trips are usually shared with others traveling in the same general direction.

The deadline for feedback on the proposed changes is Dec. 31, 2021. To get involved:

  • Visit www.gettingonboardmauibus.com to see the proposed changes and take a brief survey; and/or
  • Talk with the project team in person:
  • Dec. 7 at Queen Ka`ahumanu Center in Kahului from 9 to 11 a.m. and at the Pi`ilani Village Shopping Center in Kihei from 3 to 5 p.m.
