It may seem impossible, but there are times when anyone might have spare time to kill on Maui.

Maybe it’s that period between checkout and a flight; or perhaps you still have several hours to wait before that all-important reservation at Mama’s Fish House.

Whatever it is, Maui Insight understands. In response we have done extensive research on various ways to waste time on Maui. Here are the results:

  • Drive to Lahaina and back (or vice-versa) during rush hour. Estimated time killed: 4 hours. Bonus: try to make it to Kapalua and back during rush hour in less than 6 hours.
  • Whale watch from the shoreline in summer or early fall
  • Visit all 3 box stores in the Boxmuda Triangle in Kahului (Walmart, Target, and Costco) and do an entire circle inside each mega-box-store before exiting. Est. time killed: 4 to 5 hours
  • Rent a Volkswagen bug and drive to the top of Haleakala and back. Est. time killed: 4 hours
  • Get every member of your party to use the public restroom at Lahaina Boat Harbor. Est. time killed: 2 to 4 hours
  • Repair the axle and wheel alignment on your rental car sustained from driving too fast over the speed bumps at Kahului Airport (OGG). Est. time killed: 4 to 8 hours
  • In Kihei, visit the new roundabout and try to drive through every entry lane and exit ramp without being honked at. Est. time killed: 6 hours. Bonus: Keep using the roundabout for 8 hours without a traffic collision or stopping to urinate
  • Play "Count the Rubber Safety Cones" while driving, and stop only when someone reaches 100 cones seen. Est. time killed: 30 minutes
  • Visit any shave ice shack and debate the staff about whether it's called shave ice, or shaved ice. Est. time killed: 2 hours
  • Go sit and relax on any beach. Est. time killed: depends on how much you need
