Maui County officials scrambling to deal with the avalanche of visitors are exploring ways to help tourists to drive better and not get in the way of locals.
As part of this effort, county transportation administrators have suggested the Dumb-Down Driving (DDD) program to install simpler new road signs.
“We thought ‘Water on Road During Rain’ was simple, but apparently we used too many words,” said Todd Rollerhauser of the Maui County transportation department. “In fact we don’t think that one had any impact at all. Thankfully it hardly rains anymore with climate change and all.”
Some ideas the MTD is thinking of sending to County Council for consideration include:
- Local Behind? Pull Aside!
- Too Many Cars, Take Chill Pill
- Warning: Tacoma Crossings
- No Talk Story on Highway
- No Need Back-In Parking
- It Costco, Always Crowded
- Luau Ahead, Turn Around
- No Trespassing Means Just That
Maui County transportation officials welcome input from the community. They hope to get a proposal to County Council by the end of September, so the new signs will be up before busy season 2023.
