Maui chickens, long spoiled by the luxury bread and other snacks tossed at their feet, have been impacted by inflation as feeders go budget-conscious.
“Darn entitled chickens,” said Todd Orozco, a visitor at Kihei Bay Surf this week. “For years we got them Dave’s Killer Bread from Foodland, but inflation forced us to go to Safeway for their store-brand white bread.
“It’s all we could afford. But these chickens now turn away from us.”
“I’m pretty sure I saw one stick his tongue out at us,” said Orozco’s friend Nicole Blizzard, both of Simi Valley, Calif.
Local veterinarians say that, indeed, wild animals can become accustomed to the food they regularly get.
“Unfortunately these animals expect to always get the snacks. In time they develop a taste for things like Dave’s bread or luxury chocolate.”
Chris Waiwai of the Maui Isle Chicken Appreciation Association (MICAA) said people should get their priorities straight in this era of record-high inflation.
“The chickens are stressed out, too,” Waiwai said. “We should be doing all we can to comfort them, even if it means feeding them crumbs of Dave’s.”
Patchy rain nearby, with a high of 77 and low of 66 degrees. Sunny for the morning, patchy rain nearby for the afternoon and evening, clear overnight.
